Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Aubrey Huff exhibited patience and terrific plate coverage last season as he finished ranked as a top 50 player for the second time in three years. Huff set a career high in walks, walk percentage, and total number of pitches seen. Interestingly, he was actually chasing more pitches outside the strikezone last year than any other season. What made him successful was making contact on these pitches with more than 9% greater frequency last year than he did in 2009.
Huff's home run to fly ball rate was a little on the high side last year compared to where it was in 2009. And while the 14.4% number is only 0.5% over his career total, playing in AT&T Park should catch up to him more this season on his deeper fly balls. Huff also became a pretty average player in the second half particularly in August and September last season. He is prone to streaks that can carry him to the aforementioned top 50 seasons, but also go through season-long droughts that have led to him being ranked 394 in 2009, 248 in 2007, and 353 in 2006. At 34 years old and with what is in all likelihood his last big contract signed it's hard to fathom another top 50 season or even top 100 season.
Projection: I look for a regression in terms of the numbers of walks Huff has and ultimately the amount of times he reaches base and scores. That complimented with a lower HR:FB rate will bring him down about 100 spots in 2010.
