Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
I admit, looking at this ranking for Juan Pierre it seems a bit high. Would I really take him in the 7th round of a 12 team draft? Well there's a case to be made for him. Last season he was ranked 54th overall. The previous two seasons he was ranked in the 250s, but that's because he was playing behind an outfield of Manny Ramirez, Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier most of the time and barely logged over 400 plate appearances in each of those seasons. Pierre not only averaged 58 steals per season (enough to lead the Majors last year by 8) the five seasons before that, but he never missed a single game. At 32 last year, he proved that his legs are still fine. He took the steals crown by a whopping 18 bases over Rajai Davis. His impact in that category last year was greater than that of Barry Bonds' home runs during his 73 home run season.
Pierre can't help you in RBI and home runs. That's not anything new, but his OPS last season was the second lowest of his career. He hit just 22 extra base hits. That can be a frustrtating number to deal with for the White Sox if guys like Paul Konerko and Alex Rios don't come close to matching their 2010 seasons.
Projection: Lost in all the talk of the steals is that Pierre also scored 96 runs. I don't know if he can do that since much of the White Sox lineup will be a due for a regression, but Pierre started 156 games as the leadoff hitter last year. He will be in prime position to score at least 90 again this season.
