Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Colby Lewis was a top prospect for the Rangers in 2002 but it took him 7 years to make a significant impact for the Rangers team. After having over a 6 ERA over 5 MLB seasons, Lewis saw a career resurgence when he went to play for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and posted a 2.82 ERA while leading the Japanese Leagues in strikeouts each of his two years (thanks to a new throwing motion and pitching mindset.)
Seen as a low impact signing by many at the time, Lewis gave the Rangers a steadying force in their rotation all year long posting a 3.72 ERA. His transformation is due mainly to two reasons: his great K/9 rate and improved control. At 8.78 K/9, he ranked in 12th in all of MLB and his 2.9 BB/9 was the lowest of his MLB baseball career.
With one good year in MLB, it will be interesting to see how teams adapt to Lewis in Year 2, even though there was not a noticeable split in the 1st and 2nd halves. The main concern, however, is Lewis' home ballpark in Arlington coupled with his fly-ball tendencies. Arlington was the 6th worst ballpark for pitchers in 2010 and was 7th in terms of HR's. With a 2010 GB/FB rate of 0.64, a few more mistakes in 2011 would probably result in an ERA over 4 for Lewis.
Projection: Colby Lewis is not the most exciting name you'll call in your fantasy draft but as your 4th or 5th starter on your staff he'll be a great source of K's and Wins while not hurting your ERA or WHIP.
16 Wins 3.80 ERA 1.21 WHIP 191 K's in 210 innings
