Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
After appearing in 234 games from 2006 through 2009, C.J. Wilson appeared in just 33 last season. The transition from reliever to starter worked out beautifully for fantasy baseball waiver rats and the American League's best team in 2010. Predictably, Wilson got less strikeouts as a starter (7.5 K/9) than a reliever (8.9 K/9) from 2006 to 2009, but his rate last year was still respectable. Complimented with the fact that he threw over 200 innings, and his strikeouts were a welcome site to leagues that did not carry an innings limit.
This ranking for Wilson is about as high as any ranking out there. He finished last year ranked 102 by Yahoo, but there's plenty of reason to believe that's as good as it will ever get for him. The first is that last year's emergence came out of nowhere. From 2008 to 2009, Wilson had a WHIP of 1.45. The role change was not just a result of him having "great potential," but it was more likely a last ditch effort to salvage a pitcher who could get outs in 2007 and 2008. The plan worked, but Wilson does not have the consistent body of work that younger pitchers who will be drafted around him such as Yovani Gallardo, Chad Billingsley, and Matt Garza do.
Let's also remember that although Wilson is 30, the innings jump he had last year could take its toll on his arm this year. He threw 154.2 more innings last season. I'm more optimistic on this front because Wilson's playoff numbers were not a drop off from his regular season numbers.
Projection: His second half ERA and WHIP were both one one hundredth of a point away from his first half ERA and WHIP. As far as the four main categories for pitchers go, Wilson won't knock your socks off in any one, but he will be above average in all four.
17 wins 3.45 ERA 1.27 WHIP 178 K in 205 innings
