Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
One marriage and one child. Perhaps nothing contributed more to Clay Buchholz's success last season than his beautiful wife of Deal or No Deal fame, Lindsay Clubine. Seriously. Buchholz had a reputation for not being the most professional of people once he left the ballpark, and even former teammate Curt Schilling cited the fact that Buchholz getting settled down has helped him on the field. When you throw a no hitter in your second MLB start, it's clear that you possess excellent stuff, but we finally saw Buchholz put everything together last season.
Buchholz had a 2.33 ERA and a 3.61 FIP. Teammates John Lackey, Josh Beckett, and Jon Lester all had a lower FIP than they did in ERA.
Buchholz's HR:FB rate was inexplicably went down more than 10% from 2009 to 2010.
And finally his strikeout rate is definitely below average for a shallow mixed league starting pitcher. That could change over time, but given that he has been in the 6s for K/9 the last two seasons, I'm not holding my breath.
Projection: Since he plays in a big market, wears the young player label, and is coming off a season that was a little better than it should have been, Buchholz will be taken earlier than he should be in 2011.
17 wins 3.30 ERA 1.27 WHIP 147 K in 204 innings
