Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
One of the questions to consider is how much stock do you put in Paul Konerko's best fantasy season ever.
He finished the season ranked 12th on Yahoo's player rater and he wasn't even ranked in the top 150 in the preseason by FBHS last year. That's because at age 34 he was 1 point off his career high in batting average (set when he was 30), 6 RBI off his career best (set when he was 28), and 2 off his career high in home runs (set when he was 28). There was no way to see it coming. In 2009 he was ranked 109 and in 2008 he was ranked in the 300s.
Coming into last season, Konerko had a .277 career average. He hit 35 points above that last year. Yet his line drive rate was below his career average and was his strikeout rate was about 4% higher last year than his career rate. I would take the under on Bill James' prediction of a .289 average this season and would be shocked if Konerko placed in the top ten in the AL in that category again this season.
Konerko also benefitted from more of his fly balls leaving the park last season. His HR:FB rate was 19.5% - the highest it has been since 2005.
Projection: I hate veterans who had a good year out of nowhere.
82 R 31 HR 99 RBI 0 SB .285 AVG .910 OPS
