Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
David Ortiz was definitely written off in early 2009. He had just one home run in the first two months of the season and hit .143 in May. Last year he came out of the gates and hit .143 in April. Once again he was written off and talk radio in Boston came down hard on him, but once again he settled down and had a great season. Ortiz finished the season with the same amount of home runs as the eventual MVP Josh Hamilton and also had his best season in terms of batting average since 2007.
The 28% strikeout rate was a career high for Ortiz last season which could mean the 35 year old is losing bat speed or incapable of getting to certain pitches anymore. In almost any league you do, Ortiz will have just designated hitter eligibility which really ties a team down as far as flexibility during a draft and at the beginning of a season. Speaking of the beginning of a season, how much confidence can you have drafting a guy who has hit .196 with one home run in his last two Aprils?
Projection: Is this Papi's last season with the Red Sox?
81 R 28 HR 109 RBI .258 AVG .870 OPS
