Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Michael Young has been ranked 59th to 92nd for the last five years under Yahoo's player rater. Last year at age 33, was Young's best in terms of fantasy value over that five year span. Vladimir Guerrero's hot start and Josh Hamilton's MVP season helped Young get over 90 runs and 90 RBI for the first time since 2006.
A 1% increase in his strikeout rate and 4% decrease in line drive rate caused Young's BABIP to fall to .311 last year. That is about 20 points lower than his career BABIP and it resulted in Young finishing with just a .284 average (tied for his worst average dating back to 2003). Over the years, Young's strongest category, and the reason that an owner ultimately pulls the trigger on him in drafts, has been for his strong batting average. Getting just a .284 number last year was tough to swallow.
Projection: Bill James thinks that Young's BABIP will return to Young's career level this season. I'm a little worried, but not having to play the field could be just what the doctor ordered.
