Key Stats: Kevin Youkilis had only missed four games before his season was ended to an unusual tear in a thumb muscle. Before the injury, Youkilis was hitting much like he has since 2008. He had the highest OPS of his career last season and would have had an excellent chance to reach the 30 home run plateau for the first time ever. He also had the lowest strikeout rate (18.5%) of his career while keeping his walk rate where it has always been.
Youkilis is going to be 32 this season, but beyond the injury really isn't showing any signs of age catching up to him.
Skeptics Say: While the age didn't wear on him last year, it could be a little harder on him this year as he settles into playing third base full-time for the first time in his Major League career. Taking a young hitter like Chris Coghlan, and moving him from second base to center field is one thing, but Youkilis has been mostly a third baseman for the last five seasons.
Projection: Don't let the fact that he isn't third base eligible to begin the season steer you away.
