Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Certain people have their calling cards. Jim Boeheim loves to play zone. The Indianapolis Colts thrive in the no huddle with Peyton Manning barking out the calls. And I love to draft young players who have huge Septembers. Yep, I just compared Manning and Boeheim to me - quite a compliment to those guys since I have more than one fantasy championship and those guys have just one of whatever it is that they do.
Anyway, Brian Matusz was drafted 4th overall just two and a half years ago, and really came into his own during his last nine starts of the season. He had eight quality starts in this stretch of time (the only start that wasn't a quality start he allowed no runs, but left early after being hit with a line drive), and beat the Yankees, Red Sox, Rays, and Rangers over that stretch (ranked 1, 2, 3, 5 in runs scored in all of baseball).
His fastball was down 1.5 MPH on average compared to his rookie season when he pitched just 44.1 innings. He had problems beginning games as he had an ERA over 11.00 after his first 15 pitches of a game. And finally, his K:BB against lefties was 4.6, but against righties only 1.77.
Projection: Just to finish the point on the peer comparison, Yovani Gallardo had a 1.36 ERA in September of 2007 and lasted just four starts in 2008. Pitchers have their own way of turning out some Elijah Dukes types of players, but I'll take my chances that Matusz outperforms the general expectations for him.
13 wins 3.63 ERA 1.28 WHIP 178 K in 193 innings

KFFL Says:
Brian Matusz was dominant (7-1, 2.18 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 7.55 K/9) in 2010's final two months. Showalter's arrival seemed to affect the lefty more than any other player on the roster. He's a gamer. A likely shortage of wins and some more growing pains in an intimidating AL East curtails enthusiasm some. But there's upside, with forecasted improvements in all ratios.

Suite 101 Fantasy Baseball Says:
Matusz was a first-round selection (fourth overall) of the O's in the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft and was considered a top prospect while in the minor leagues. His overall numbers last year weren't very impressive (10-12, 4.30 ERA and 1.34 WHIP), but take a closer look at his splits and you'll see the hard-throwing lefty went 7-1 with a 2.17 ERA after July. Another sign of his potentials is a career 7.4 strikeouts to innings pitched ratio. He pitches in a tough division (AL East), but last season Matusz beat the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays twice and pitched to a 2.92 ERA against the Yankees in four games. A full season under Buck Showalter in Baltimore could produce a breakout season – if only he could improve on his career 6-8 mark at Camden Yards. Take a chance on Matusz to fill out the back end of your rotation and hope for more.
