Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Usually when a top-25 pitcher is demoted to the minor leagues, it’s newsworthy. However, when Max Scherzer, a top-25 pitcher and the #121 player overall according to Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove’s 2010 preseason rankings, was demoted to the minors on May 15 it didn’t make the headlines of this blog (nor many other fantasy blogs). That’s what happens when you have a 7.29 ERA and lose more than 5 miles per hour off of your fastball.
A little more than 2 weeks later, Scherzer made the headlines of every fantasy site when he struck out 14 Oakland athletics in 5 2/3 innings. This start was the catalyst for a dominating five months for Scherzer who had a 2.46 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 9.25 K/9 ratio from May 30 on.
Scherzer credited his turnaround to a change in his pitching motion. Specifically, he shortened his arm action increasing his velocity back up to the mid-high 90s which he was accustomed to throwing and helping him hide his slider better.
Last offseason the Arizona Diamondbacks traded Scherzer to the Detroit Tigers in large part because “some in the organization believe(d) his violent delivery ultimately could lead to injury.” Considering that he had shoulder injuries in 2006, 2008 and 2009, this concern seems legitimate.
Another knock on Scherzer is his inability to pitch deep into the games. While that may have been a valid criticism in the past, it’s probably not relevant anymore. Jim Leyland tends to let his pitchers go deep into games and in the second half last year Scherzer averaged almost seven innings a start.
Projection: After May 30, Scherzer was one of the best pitchers in the league last year. As both his slider and changeup continue to improve, so should his numbers as well.
15 W, 3.35 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 220 K in 212 innings.

Razzball Says:
In May, Max Scherzer got dunked in the Triple-A holy Toledo water. Before that spiritual awakening, he had an ERA of 7.29. In 23 starts after that trip, 2.46. Before that trip, a 5.6 K/9. Afterwards, 9.3 K/9. Before, he was hitting 91.8 MPH on the speed gun. After, 93.5 MPH. Before, his fastball was put into play 16.1% of the time. After, 13.7%. Praise the Lord! Scherzer was cured. When he returned from Toledo, the Tigers should have had him punch through one of those life-size, Biggest Loser finale cutouts to fully appreciate the Before and After. You know what year major league pitchers tend to peak? Their third season starting. Know what year Scherzer will be in? His third full season. You old goat, you made me fall in love! Someone get me a handkerchief because I’m going to put it to my forehead and faint. So what can we expect of Max Scherzer in 2011 fantasy baseball?

Suite 101 Fantasy Baseball Says:
A 12-11 record and 3.50 ERA from last season masks a sparkling second half performance by the former 2006 first-round pick (11th overall) of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Scherzer was bombed in four May starts (1-3, 9.45 ERA, 1.90 WHIP), which earned him a demotion to the minor leagues and put an ever-lasting dent in his overall numbers. However, Mad Max returned from the minors with a vengeance on May 30, striking out 14 Oakland Athletics in 5.2 innings. He went on to post a 2.47 ERA and 1.14 WHIP after the All-Star break, including a four-game stretch in August in which he didn't allow more than one earned run in any start. Scherzer has filthy stuff, but his lack of command sometimes gets him in trouble. If he can get better control of his pitches, which he seemed to do in the second half of 2010, Scherzer can be a front-of-the-rotation guy for the Tigers and your fantasy baseball team.
