Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Two months into the season, I had a conversation with my roommate about the best starting pitchers in the American League. “Write this down,” I said. “We’ll be talking about Ricky Romero is one of the top pitchers in the league.” While I have a tendency to exaggerate, I was 100% sure I was right on this prediction. At the time, Ricky Romero’s stats – 3.14 ERA, 9.19 K/9, 3.38 BB/9 and 5Ws in 12 starts – certainly supported my belief.
What I should have written down was “small sample size”. Ricky Romero pitched like the above-average groundball machine many people thought he would be. His 3.79 ERA, 7.46 K/9 and 3.51 BB/9 ratios represented moderate improvements from his 2009 stats, but that was to be expected from 25 year old pitcher in his second season.
Romero’s strikeouts nosedived after the all-star break last year as evidenced by his 6.34 K/9 ratio. Furthermore, his fastball velocity decreased 1.0 MPH from the previous year also suggesting that he might not be able to pitch at an above-average level for 200+ innings as he did last year.
Skeptics also might point out that his upside is limited. He’s been good during his first two seasons in the majors, but not great. He also never showed the ability to dominate in the minors (430.0 IP, 4.42 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 7.0 K/9, 3.8 BB/9).
Projection: Romero doesn’t have a ton of upside, but he’ll produce like a #4 fantasy starter this year.
15 wins 3.95 ERA 1.36 WHIP 183 Ks in 220 innings
