Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove Says:
Initially I actually had Carlos Marmol being picked in the 140s. Day after day though I could not bring myself to do it. He struck out 16 batters per 9 innings. Usually you say that those types of numbers are out of a video game, but they aren't. Even the video games are more realistic than that. Marmol's numbers beat the next best reliever by about 3 strikeouts per 9 innings (minimum 50 innings).
The position is filled with risk. At this time last year, I had Jonathan Broxton and Jonathan Papelbon as my second and third ranked closers. And why not they were both top 100 overall players the season before playing with two of the biggest market teams in the league. They were supposed to be sure things at closer. Neither player lived up to expectations. I suppose you could the same about Huston Street and Joe Nathan, but that would be putting it kindly.
Projection: The walks may be a small problem, but Marmol let up just two hits in September and October in 15.2 innings. As far as closer turnover goes, it's not likely to crop up with numbers like that.
34 saves 4 wins 110 K 2.90 ERA 1.24 WHIP in 75 innings
